Wednesday 6th August 2008

A conman who dodged justice by escaping to Spain has been dumped by his wife at Gatwick Airport after he suffered a stroke. She promptly flew back to Spain after telling customs officers that he was a wanted man.

David Hubbard-Beale, 55 has been hit hard by his stroke as he is now unable to eat, speak or wash and is also wheelchair bound. Hubbard-Beale had pleaded guilty in December 2003 to several crimes involving finances however before sentencing could take place he had flown to Spain and proved highly elusive for UK authorities to track down with all efforts to find him failing.

When Bubbard-Beale's wife dumped him at Gatwick staff were forced to contact the police who arrested him and took him to Crawley police station. However due to the condition Hubbard-Beale was in, police telephoned judge Richard Brown QC at 10pm in the evening to speak to him about where he should be taken. He has been allowed bail on the condition that he remains at a nursing home until the court are able to deal with his case.
