Inverness Airport was originally a base for the RAF during the Second World War. At the end of hostilities it opened up for civilian flights in 1947. In the mid-1970's British European Airways began flights to London Heathrow and by the end of the decade there were services twice daily there.
In 1983 the Heathrow Airport flights were withdrawn and it was left to Dan Air to fly the route which they expanded to three times daily, and in the late 1980's this service was expanded to Gatwick and Manchester which were unsuccessful.
When Dan-Air were taken over by British Airways in 1992 the service expanded to four times daily however this was then withdrawn in 1997. The link from Inverness Airport to Heathrow has now been re-established with carrier BMI on a daily basis.
