History

Humberside airport logo

The site of Humberside Airport was opened in 1941 due to the outbreak of the Second World War, from this base the RAF squadron 166 operated the Lancaster bomber that was instrumental in attacks on German targets in Europe. After the war the site was left in a state of disrepair after being abandoned by the RAF.

In 1974 the local council saw the opportunity of opening an airport on the disused airfield and the site was once again active with aircraft. When the local area was renamed Humberside the airport followed and was renamed Humberside Airport. In 1992 improvements were made to Humberside Airport including a runway extension to allow bigger aircraft to operate from it.
