Liquids

November 2007: Please note that our sources indicate that there will be changes to UK Airport baggage allowances as of the 7th January 2008. Please visit January Baggage Allowances to see what will be changing.

The Department for Transport has made important changes to the UK's aviation security measures relating to the quantity of liquids that passengers are permitted to take on board any passenger aircraft. These changes apply to all EU airports regardless of your flight destination. Please read the following details carefully as security at the airports will NOT permit anything outside these guidelines.

  • You may carry a small quantity of liquid which must be within separate containers. Each of these containers must have a capacity no greater than 100ml.
  • Any container that has a capacity higher than 100ml is not allowed, this applies even if it is only partially full.
  • The aforementioned containers must be held within a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag, which must not exceed 1 litre in capacity. This must be prepared by the time you reach the airport security checks. (approximately 20cms x 20cms).
  • The container(s) must fit inside the plastic bag comfortably so that it can be sealed, if the bag appears to be over-filled you may not be permitted to take it onboard.
  • Only one of these clear re-sealable bags is allowed per passenger.
  • The bag must be presented for examination and x-ray at the airport already prepared as mentioned above.
  • Any liquids that cannot be placed or will not fit into the re-sealable bag MUST be packed into the hold luggage and checked in.
  • Liquids of any quantity can be carried in luggage checked into the aircraft luggage-hold.

Please be aware that the term 'liquids' includes the following:

  • All drinking substances, including water, soup, and syrups.
  • Creams, lotions and balms, oils, all perfumes, all cosmetics, including mascara and lipstick.
  • Pressurised containers such as shaving foam, spray deodorants and insect repellents.
  • All pastes, including toothpastes.
  • Contact lens solution.
  • All gels, this includes hair and shower gel.
  • Any other solutions of similar consistency.

Medicines and baby food: Passengers are permitted to take as hand luggage essential medicines or baby food required ONLY for the duration of the journey. Any amounts under 100mls should be placed in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag, as with all other liquids of this quantity. If the medication or baby food exceeds 100mls, it should be presented to the operator at security for inspection. There is no limit on the amount allowed, however please be aware you may be asked to verify the substance by tasting it, or to provide documentation for verification, such as a doctor's letter.

Cabin Baggage

Every passenger is now permitted to carry only one single item through the airport search points. This item must have a maximum size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Please be aware that this is the maximum size allowed and that some airlines may have their own individual size limitations. If unsure you should contact the airline you are travelling with for the latest baggage information. Please also remember that you must be able to fit your re-sealable bag containing liquids into your cabin baggage.

Please note these important points regarding cabin baggage:

  • Pushchairs, wheelchairs and all walking aids are allowed onboard the aircraft but must be security screened.
  • Handbags / briefcases / laptops / electrical items. These items must be able to fit into your single item of cabin baggage, these are no longer allowed as additional, separate bags.
  • Laptops and other large electrical items will still have to be removed from cabin baggage and screened separately. Smaller items however such as mobile phones, games consoles and MP3 players can be left in your bag for screening. A laptop bag will be regarded as your one single item of baggage that is allowed in the cabin.
  • Any outsize items that do not fit in the permitted cabin baggage size (maximum length of 56 cm, width of 45 cm and depth of 25 cm) must be checked in to be stored in the aircraft hold for the journey.
  • Musical instruments are an exception, they are allowed as a second item of cabin baggage. Please be aware however that musical instruments will need to be screened seperately and passengers should check with their airlines if special arrangements (for example, purchasing an extra seat due to the size of the instrument) will be required.

Be Prepared

Before setting off please take the time to read the following information to familiarise yourself with the procedures you will encounter at the airport. Thinking ahead and making sure you do not arrive at the security desks unprepared will make both your own journey and that of your fellow passengers just that little bit easier.

Before you arrive at the airport:

Limit what you take to just what you are likely to need in the cabin during the flight wherever possible. Place excess liquids in your hold baggage and prepare the re-sealable bag of liquids before arriving at the airport. If you have any queries or questions telephone the airport or airline before travelling.

At the security point:

Be prepared to hand over your re-sealable bag of liquids for screening when you reach the security point. The bag will be screened at the same time as your cabin luggage is. Any overcoats or jackets you have will have to be removed and screened and all metal items will have be placed in plastic trays and scanned separately through the x-ray machine. If you are taking a laptop or large electrical item in your cabin luggage, then please have it ready for screening as you approach the security desks.

Duty free and departure lounge purchases:

You are permitted to take on board any liquid items of any size and dimension that are bought after the security check procedures in the departure lounge. Many duty free purchases will be provided in a special sealed bag - do not open this bag until you have reached your final destination You should always retain your receipt for these goods throughout your journey, as you will be required to show it at all transfer points as you travel
You are permitted to buy food and drink items in the departure lounge for consumption onboard. Please be aware that restrictions apply to duty free purchases made on return journeys when passengers change flights at an EU airport. These are the requirements set down by the Department for Transport. Many airlines and airports may have their own limitations and you are strongly urged to check your airport and carrier limits before setting out to the airport.

Returning to or via the UK

Travelling from an airport in the EU, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland to the UK then the arrangements outlined above will be valid, however larger hand luggage bags may be permitted on a transitional basis, (contact your airline for up-to-date information). Members of the European Union are Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. If you are to travel from any other country then other arrangements and limitations may apply, we strongly advise you to check this before departure.

Travelling from an airport in any other country

In this instance local arrangements will apply, we strongly advise you to check these arrangements before the start of your journey.

Special Information For Transit Passengers

If your journey involves you changing flights at any EU airport (listed above), then special restrictions will apply. You are permitted to take only take liquid items such as duty free through the security check point at your connecting airport under the following criteria:
That they conform to the requirements for passengers departing from any EU airport as listed above above or if they have been purchased airside at any another EU airport, or on an aircraft operated by an EU carrier. As mentioned previously this is why it is important to carry a receipt to prove where the goods were purchased. Any liquid items over 100ml that have been obtained from any other airports or on board any other airlines are only permitted to be taken onboard as hold baggage on the connecting flight.
