Airport Baggage and Security Restrictions

Since new baggage restrictions were introduced in the wake of the 2005 terror attacks in London, there have been several changes and modifications made to the rules. Today the allowances can differ from airport to airport and airline to airline.

It would be impossible for Compare Airport Parking to list - in detail - all the airline and airports detailed requirements. This information is available on the airline and airport websites which we have linked to, and telephone numbers have also been provided that will allow you to contact them and obtain the latest information before you travel.

We have examined each airports requirements, as well as a selection of the most popular airlines, and listed these details for you below. Please be aware that these are used as a guide and that they cannot be as detailed or as up-to-date as ringing your airline or airport before you travel.

Below are the current baggage rules at UK airports. This information has been sourced from the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) and the Department for Transport. There are variations to this which should be available to see on either the airport or airline website which we have provided contact details and links to further down this page. If your airline is not listed on our site then it will most likely to be able to be found by typing its name into the Google search engine.

The One Bag Rule

New regulations were brought in that were effective from the 7th of January 2008 that removed the limit of one item of baggage per passenger. Many airports have now removed the one bag per passenger rule - however not all of them. The following airports are no longer running a one item rule for their passengers (Compare Airport Parking do not offer parking at all of these airports).

Aberdeen, Belfast International, Benbecula, Biggin Hill, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Blackpool, Bristol, Cambridge, Cardiff, City of Derry, Coventry, Dundee, Durham Tees Valley, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Farnborough, Filton, Gatwick, George Best Belfast City airport, Glasgow, Gloucestershire, Guernsey, Hawarden airport, Heathrow, Humberside, Inverness, Islay, Isle of Man, Jersey, Kent International, Kirkwall, Leeds Bradford, London City, Manchester, Newcastle, Newquay Corwall, Norwich, Plymouth, Prestwick, Robin Hood, Scatsa, Southampton, Southend, Stansted, Stornoway, Sumburgh, Tiree, Warton, Wick.

These airports are officially recognised as no longer operating a one item per passenger rule. However we STRONGLY ADVISE passengers to check with their airline and airport before travelling to ensure no changes have been made to their limits. If your airport is not listed above then we suggest that it is ESSENTIAL you contact the airport and airline on the numbers provided to check your baggage limits.

Hand Luggage Dimensions

The maximum size hand luggage is permitted to be is 56cmx45cmx25cm including all protruding features such as wheels and handles. Your clear re-sealable bag (see liquids section) must be able to comfortably fit within this bag, however will be required to be presented separately at the security desk. As we have already stated some airlines may have alternative regulations in place regarding the size of bags, and we suggest calling them before you travel to ensure you are aware of this.

Additional Baggage Advice - Liquids

Passengers are advised to place all their items containing liquids into their hold luggage. Liquids include water and any other form of drink as well as creams, pastes, gels and sprays.

If you wish to take a liquid in your hand luggage then the following rules apply:

Any liquid, gel or paste is only permitted to be of 100ml or less in any given container. All containers of 100ml or less must be able to fit inside a clear, re-sealable bag that is no larger than 20cmx20cm. The bag itself must not be larger than one litre in capacity. You may use items such as a freezer bag for this.

Rule Exceptions

1. Medicines - if you require essential medicines for the duration of your journey then you may be allowed to take more than 100ml onboard. In order to take more than 100ml you must have gained the prior permission of the airline you intend to travel with, as well as the departure airport. You will also be required to bring documents with you from a doctor or another certified medical professional.

2. Baby food - if you require baby food in a quantity that is sufficient for your journey then you may do this, however the adult that is accompanying the child will need to taste it to ensure it authenticity.

3. Medical Equipment - passengers who need to carry medical equipment that is essential for use during the flight are usually permitted to do so in the cabin. If possible the equipment should be contained within a single piece of hand luggage and will be required to have documentation from a doctor or qualified medical professional. We suggest contacting your airline before arriving at the airport with the equipment to ensure it will be permitted in the cabin.

4. Special Diets - any special liquid dietary foods that are required are permitted to be taken through security, however will have to be verified by the passenger by tasting them.

5. Electrical Goods - if you wish to take a laptop computer or other electrical item with you in the aircraft cabin then this will have to be screen separately when going through security. If a laptop is contained within a bag then this will be considered as a one piece of hand luggage. If it can fit it within your cabin baggage however, then it will not.

6. Larger Items Of Baggage - if you have a piece of luggage that is over the dimensions set for cabin baggage (56cmx45cmx25cm) then it will have to be checked in to the aircrafts baggage hold. The only exceptions to this rule are musical instruments. Instruments are permitted as a second piece of hand luggage, however larger instruments may need to have a second seat purchased for them due to the space they occupy. We suggest checking with your airline before you travel about arrangements for transporting a musical instrument.

Be Prepared Before You Arrive

Before setting off please take the time to read the our information to familiarise yourself with the procedures you will encounter at the airport. Thinking ahead and making sure you do not arrive at the security desks unprepared will make both your own journey and that of your fellow passengers just that little bit easier.

Before you arrive at the airport:

Limit what you take to just what you are likely to need in the cabin during the flight wherever possible. Place excess liquids in your hold baggage and prepare the re-sealable bag of liquids before arriving at the airport. If you have any queries or questions telephone the airport or airline before travelling.

At the security point:

Be prepared to hand over your re-sealable bag of liquids for screening when you reach the security point. The bag will be screened at the same time as your cabin luggage is. Any overcoats or jackets you have will have to be removed and screened and all metal items will have be placed in plastic trays and scanned separately through the x-ray machine. If you are taking a laptop or large electrical item in your cabin luggage, then please have it ready for screening as you approach the security desks.

Duty free and departure lounge purchases:

You are permitted to take on board any liquid items of any size and dimension that are bought after the security check procedures in the departure lounge. Many duty free purchases will be provided in a special sealed bag - do not open this bag until you have reached your final destination. You should always retain your receipt for these goods throughout your journey, as you will be required to show it at all transfer points as you travel.
You are permitted to buy food and drink items in the departure lounge for consumption onboard. Please be aware that restrictions apply to duty free purchases made on return journeys when passengers change flights at an EU airport. These are the requirements set down by the Department for Transport. Many airlines and airports may have their own limitations and you are strongly urged to check your airport and carrier limits before setting out to the airport.

Baggage Charges

Baggage Limits

Your baggage limits will usually be printed on your airline ticket. It should provide information on your allowances. If you have an e-ticket then these details should be able to be found on your conformation notice.

For luggage that is to be checked into the aircraft hold there are two types of allowance available. These allowances are either termed by 'weight' or 'piece'. The weight allowances can vary by a significant ammount, however usually fall within the criteria of 15kg to 60kg dependant on the airline or airport. This can also depend on the class your are travelling in. Under normal circumstances you will be limited to two pieces of hold luggage, however this is just a guide and can vastly vary between different airlines and airports. We strongly urge you to check with your airline or airport on the number or website links we have provided to ensure you are clear as to the criteria in place for your journey.
Piece allowances are usually more lenient and can often allow up to 32kg of weight for each piece of luggage, however we would again urge you to check this with your carrier or airport before you make your way to the airport.

Hand baggage is usually measured by number of pieces, weight and size. This - like hold baggage - can vary between different carriers and airports. Again we would suggest checking with your airline or airport for the latest regulations regarding hand baggage.
