Aberdeen Airport History
Aberdeen Airport began life in 1934 under the ownership of Eric Gandar Dower, with the purpose of creating a link between the Scottish northern islands and London.
During the Second World War Aberdeen Airport was used for the stationing of military fighters, however due to its location saw little military confrontation and was used primarily for reconnaissance operations. Following the end of hostilities Aberdeen Airport was nationalised in 1947 and put under the control of the BAA in 1975 for commercial operations.
Aberdeen Airport played a critical role in the commercial exploitation of North Sea Oil and provided a valuable link for workers and other personnel wishing to travel to the off-shore oil rigs. These helicopter flights helped the airport to grow to be the largest commercial heliport in the world, which it can still boast to this day.
